Make a flea market find look like an old French country piece with decoupage and distressing techniques.
Materials:

furniture (sideboard, cabinet, chest , etc.)
decorative molding
finishing nails
sandpaper or palm sander
soft cloths
satin finish latex paint (white and desired base color)
copyright-free images (chickens or other farm animals , flowers, decorative trim, etc.)
masking tape
craft glue
wooden brayer
scissors
craft knife
cutting mat
low-gloss clear acrylic sealer
orange shellac

Steps:

  1. Lightly sand furniture and wipe clean. Paint piece and molding in desired color . Let dry.
  2. Glue molding to inner edge of cabinet and secure with finishing nails.
  3. Photocopy images and enlarge as needed to fit the piece. Cut out images.
  4. Use tape to arrange images on furniture until satisfied, and then glue each in place. Remove bubbles with brayer and apply another layer of glue on top. Let dry.
  5. Cover surface with white paint thinned with water, being careful not to paint over the images. Let dry.
  6. Apply a coat of orange shellac. Once dry, sand the piece in various areas until the base coat shows through for a distressed look. Apply a coat of sealer for protection .
