Materials:
sandpaper
unfinished or stripped wooden furniture
trompe l'oeil patterns
craft knife or small scissors
decoupage medium
brush
antique wash and fine artist's brush (optional)
spray-on antiquing finish or other base coat (optional)
Steps:
- Sand all edges of the furniture, and wipe it with a cloth to remove any dust.
- Spray on a coat of antiquing finish or apply a coat of light-colored paint, if desired, and let it dry.
- Carefully cut out a trompe l'oeil pattern, and brush a generous coat of decoupage medium on its back.
- Immediately position the picture on the furniture, and press it firmly into place. Let the decoupage medium dry.
- If desired, add more depth to the trompe l'oeil pattern after the first application of decoupage medium. Use a fine brush dipped into antique wash to accent the shadows around the trompe l'oeil picture. Let the wash dry.
- Repeat the process with additional trompe l'oeil patterns.
- Add another layer or two of decoupage, allowing each to dry before the next application.
Optional: Add a final coat of spray-on sealant, if desired.
