Wall-Mounted Desk

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1106 -- More Projects »
1. The featured desk needed to tie into the existing bookcase. Since the depth of the bookcase is only 12 inches, Fox created an angle that softened the transition from 12 to 24 inches (figure A). It looks nice, and is safer than a sharp right angle jutting out into the room.

2. Use 3/4-inch birch plywood to make the top and add a border made of a 1" x 3 " piece of poplar to give the desk visual stability. Use a router with a straight bit to create an edge detail (figure B).

3. Put a backsplash made of 1" x 3" poplar where the desk meets the wall. Poplar will bend, allowing it to follow any curvature of the wall, making the desk look like an even better fit.

4. Use hole covers to hide a hole for plugs. Drill the opening with a hole saw to the appropriate size and put cover in place (figure C). Feed cords for electronic equipment or lamps through the hole instead of around the front of the desk.
