Baby Changing Table

Jeanne Benedict creates a beautiful baby-changing table by recycling an old dresser.

Materials:

old dresser
tape measure
four 1' x 3' pieces of lumber
box tape
hammer
nails
coarse-grit sandpaper
latex, semi-gloss, nontoxic paints (several colors)
paintbrushes
cookie cutters, sponge shapes, etc.
premade baby-changing pad (available at baby furniture or toy stores)
safety strap

Steps:

  1. Make sure the dresser is at a comfortable height before converting it. You don't want it to sit too low (which could strain the back) or too high (forcing you to reach up). Of course, it should be sturdy--baby's safety always comes first.

  2. Create a bumper around the top perimeter of the table by taking measurements of the dresser-top perimeter, then having the lumber cut to those measurements. The front and rear pieces should extend about three-quarters of an inch beyond the edge to create a nice facing and fit well with the two side pieces.

  • If you are working alone, tape the bumper piece to the dresser, nail a center nail (figure A), remove the tape, then level and add additional nails. Continue nailing each piece around the perimeter.

  • Sand down any rough edges and apply paint to clean, dry surfaces. In this example, the drawers have been painted green and the dresser white (figure B).

  • Use cookie cutters, stencils or shaped sponges dipped in paint to add accents to the dresser drawers.

  • Top the dresser with a changing pad, or create one yourself by cutting rubber foam to size, then cover with an old raincoat. Nail a safety strap directly into the wood to finish the project.
