Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates a simple way to design and create ottomans that will complement and add versatility to home decor.
Materials:
two pieces of 12-inch square 3/4-inch
plywood
wood glue
drill and bit
large fence-post finials with imbedded screws
Dacron batting
staple gun
fabric of choice
plastic foam block
paintbrush
gel wood stain
Steps:
- Glue together two identically sized squares of plywood. Let dry.
- Drill symmetrical holes in each of the four corners to accept screws from the finials/legs.
- Put the plywood top-side down on the batting.
- Fold the batting over the edge of the plywood and staple to the back.
- Put the fabric face down on the work surface. Put the plywood, batting and foam face down on the fabric, centered on the design. Fold the excess fabric back over the edge of the plywood (figure A).
- Staple the fabric to the back. Be sure to neatly fold back the corner fabric before stapling.
- Put the screw of the finial in the foam block and rub on the gel stain. Let dry.
- Find the holes in the underside of the plywood with an awl or craft knife, and screw in the finials (figure B).
Tip
To make a neat job of folding and stapling the corner fabric, trim out some of the bulk by removing batting with scissors.
