The re-sized bed and old dresser get a new look with special painting techniques (figure A).
  1. Rough up the wood with sandpaper.
  2. Paint a base coat with brown latex paint.
  3. Paint the next coat in dark green, allowing some of the brown to show through .
  4. Dry-brush on a sheer wash of lighter green (figure B).
  5. Sand lightly.
  6. Wipe on a wood stain and wipe off quickly, to give the wood an aged appearance .
  7. Apply gold-leaf appliques, which can be found in home supply stores, and install on the mirror and headboard (figure C).
  8. Apply gold leaf to highlight other areas of the furniture, such as finials on top of the bed posts, and along drawers and handles on the dresser.
