Floral Painted Headboard

Decorative painter Donna Dewberry demonstrates how to make a handpainted headboard with a brightly colored floral motif.

Materials:

wood for backboard
acrylic paints (Plaid FolkArt brand was used)
pencil
variety of paintbrushes (Plaid One Stroke brand was used)

Steps:
  1. Paint the headboard with a base coat.

  2. Draw a pattern on the backboard with a pencil.

  3. Double-load a paintbrush by dipping it into two colors of paint, one on each side of the brush (figure A). For example, to paint leaves (figure B), use green on one side and yellow or white on the other.

  • Water down green paint to paint curlicues on the vines.
  • Use a double-loaded round brush in a pouncing fashion to create the center of the sunflowers (figure C).

  • Use a double-loaded brush, pressing down and then gradually picking it up, to make the petals (figure D).
