Designer Betty Ann Lasley tells how to construct a plush-looking headboard with fabric and plastic foam.

Materials:

2" plastic foam
low-melt glue
floral picks
scissors
quilt batting (Putnam Company's Special Edition thermal-bonded flame-resistant batting was used)
steak knife or keyhole saw to score foam
fabric of choice
putty knife
floral wire
covered buttons
craft knife

* Note: It's important to use flame-resistant batting when doing home projects.

Figure A
Steps:
  1. Cut out plastic foam to fit the bed. You will probably have to attach several pieces together. If so, attach them by applying glue on a couple of floral picks, inserting each end of the sticks into a different piece of foam and pushing the two pieces of foam together (figure A). The sticks will hold them together.

  2. Apply a bead of glue down the seam, where the two pieces of foam come together.

Figure B
  • If desired, round the corners of the foam and sand off the rough edges with a separate piece of foam (figure B).

  • Cut batting a couple of inches smaller than the foam and place it on top of the foam. Cut the fabric about one inch bigger than the batting on each side.

    Figure C
  • Score the foam slightly, following the edge of the batting and making a shallow cut into the foam with a craft knife. Apply a bead of glue along the scored "channel" (figure C).

    Figure D
  • Place fabric over the batting and, using a putty knife, tuck the edges of the fabric into the foam along the scored channel (figure D).

  • Along the outside edges of the fabric, on the foam that is not yet covered with fabric, wrap a coordinating fabric to create a border. Run another bead of glue into the channel where the first fabric is tucked, and tuck the second fabric into the same channel with the putty knife. Glue fabric onto the backside of the foam.

    Figure E
  • Thread floral wire through the covered button and stick the floral wire through the fabric, batting and foam. Turn the headboard over and pull the wires taut in the back. Twist the wires tightly. Turn the headboard back over and make sure that the button is pulled tightly against the fabric and batting, creating a pillowed effect (figure E). Continue with as many buttons as desired.
