A unique headboard for a bed can be fun, easy and just the right answer for occasionally changing the appearance of the bedroom. Try these easy ideas from Decorating Den's Sue Pelley:
- A wicker room dividing screen, with decorative items such as plates or framed photographs attached to each panel, makes a great headboard. Decorative screens are also perfect for hiding unsightly walls or open storage areas.
- Cover a sheet of plywood with decorative wallpaper that complements the walls or bed linens, and incorporate this as a headboard. Vinyl wall covering, resistant to hair and body oils, works best for this type of headboard. Cut a piece of plywood approximately 24 inches higher and one inch wider than the bed frame. Cover the plywood with wallpaper, and embellish the top and sides with a matching wall covering border or wood molding.
- Decorative iron scroll panels are wonderful for adding texture and dimension to the bed. Although a newly purchased piece may be used, decorative scroll panels are often available in salvage yards for a reasonable cost.
- An outlined, quilted headboard can be made to complement a custom bedspread. Tapestry and texture fabrics work best for the quilted technique, but shiny fabrics such as satin or silk should be avoided. Just attach the headboard to a decorative wood pole and mount it on wood pole brackets.
