This process replicates the early 1900s south-of-the-border look by adding dark, decoratively carved wood molding as a trim to a rust- and patina-finished foam core headboard cut-out.
Materials:
1/2" thick foam core
industrial strength tacky glue
sharp matte knife
hammer and nails
bristle paintbrushes
Valspar Decorative Effects paint
- Surrey Green and Bronze Glaze for the headboard
- Copper Sky, Pewter Glaze and Mocha Glaze for the border
paint roller
natural sea sponges
cheesecloth
plastic bowls
water
decoratively carved wood molding
Steps:
- Cut 1/2"-thick foam core to the desired size with a sharp matte knife. Remove any of the jagged edges.
- With a paintbrush or roller, evenly apply Surrey Green paint to the entire surface. Be sure not to apply thick layers onto the foam core because it may make it buckle. Let it dry.
- Wet a natural sea sponge in the water, and wring it out well. Dab the sponge into a bowl of Bronze Glaze, loading the sponge evenly. Randomly apply the glaze, concentrating more color in some areas. Let it dry.
- Cut the decoratively carved wood molding so that it completely borders the foam core on all edges except the bottom.
- Paint one to two layers of Copper Sky onto the wood molding with a bristle brush. If the paint does not completely fill in the carvings of the molding, the next glazing layer will do the job. Let the paint completely dry.
- Pour some of the Pewter Glaze in a bowl, and dip a wad of cheesecloth into it. Randomly dab the glaze across the surface. Let it dry. (The pewter glaze has a faster drying time than typical glazes.)
- Dab a damp natural sea sponge into a bowl of Mocha Glaze, loading the sponge evenly.
- Lightly pounce the surface with the sponge, concentrating the color in areas around the Pewter Glaze. Let it dry.
- Adhere the molding to the foam core base using industrial strength tacky glue. Press the molding firmly into place while the glue dries.
- The headboard may be nailed into the wall. Be sure to nail through the foam core directly under the wood molding, and not into it. Cover the nail heads with the background paint.
