Materials:
2' x 4' piece of plywood - cabinet grade
2" x 2" pine stock - 2 pieces, each 20" long
screws
wood glue
blue lighting gel
stapler or heavy-duty duct tape
2 small fluorescent fixtures
jig saw
drill with small drill bit
wall paint - blue, white
brushes
heavy-duty picture frame hangers
eye bolts and picture hanging wire
wood filler
sandpaper
Steps:
- Draw two lines parallel with the short sides of the plywood, four inches in from edge. Draw these lines on both sides of the wood. The lines will serve as a guide for placing the hanging runners (2x2s) and for cutting out a star pattern.
- Position the 2x2s along these lines on the backside of the plywood (being cabinet grade, both sides should be equally smooth) and attach through the front using glue and screws. Countersink the screws and use wood filler to conceal the holes.
- On the front, use the lines as guides for where the star cutouts will be placed. Note: Don't cut through the 2x2s.
- Draw a series of stars, moons, or both and use the jigsaw to cut them out. In this case, create just a few well-placed designs.
- Once the designs have been cut, sand the edges smooth and paint the entire headboard. Use shades of blue and white to give it a cloudy sky feel.
- Attach the lighting gel to the back of the headboard using staples and/or duct tape.
- Attach the fluorescent fixtures to the inside of both of the 2" x 2" runners using screws. Be sure that the lights aren't touching the gel.
- Attach the eyebolts to the inside of the 2x2s, placing them close to the top of the headboard.
- Run picture wire from one eyebolt to the other, making sure to twist each the ends adequately to ensure the wire won't come loose.
- Attach a heavy-duty picture hanger to the wall according to the package instructions. Hang and level the headboard.
