Author and designer Kathy Lamancusa create a three-dimensional look through the art of papier tole.

Creating dimensional designs produces spectacular results. Ribbon, wrapping paper and prints designed specifically for dimensional projects make lovely dimensional crafts. This technique looks great on a flat surface with a frame or as an embellishment on a lampshade, cabinet or vase. The project takes on a fine porcelain look when coated with a high-gloss finish, while a matte finish prevents glare from bright lights or the sun.

Cut out one print of the design to become the bottom layer. Spray the back with all-purpose spray adhesive. Press it with a paper towel onto the surface to be decorated. After the first print is in place, cut out duplicate prints. Keep in mind that everything is not raised, only those pieces that appear closer.

Vary the dimensional height by applying more or less silicone sealer under each piece. The objects or pieces that appear closer will have more silicone glue under them and will be farther away from the bottom layer. Once pieces are placed, gently pull them away from the design to increase dimension even more.

To apply the silicone sealer to the original picture, squeeze it out so that it resembles a chocolate chip. Use a toothpick to apply silicone in small places. Roll the silicone off the toothpick by laying it on the print and gently turning and rolling the toothpick.
