Fine oil paintings can cost thousands of dollars, but there's a way to get the look of fine canvas art without spending much money. Artist Bunny DeLorie shares how to take an artist's brush and apply a dimensional product (found in arts and crafts stores) to any poster, print or lithograph to create a three-dimensional effect.

Materials:

poster, print or lithograph
foam brush
Crafter's Pick Brush Strokes dimensional medium (Satin)
assortment of inexpensive paintbrushes

Steps:

  1. Dip a foam brush in the Brush Strokes medium and apply a thin, even coat over the entire poster.
  2. Dip a paintbrush into the medium and begin to re-create the brush strokes. Vary the brushes depending on the size of brush stroke on the poster. Use a variety of methods to "paint" the poster, including a sweeping / dragging stroke, pouncing, stippling, etc. to achieve the desired effect. Apply the medium thicker in some places to create more depth (figure A).
  3. Once dry, rub on a brown glaze with a sea sponge or rag.
  4. Frame or adhere to a piece of foam core with spray adhesive.
