Shirley Horowitz shows how to add sparkle to a home with crystal accessories:
- The sparkle and drama that a crystal chandelier provides is the perfect element in any dining room, entry or two-story stairwell. Painted iron makes it less formal than bronze or gold and the combination works well.
- A crystal finial for newel post once indicated that the mortgage was paid off . Combine one with crystal balls as accessories to add charm to any area (figure A). Note: Don't put crystal balls near a window as direct light shining through poses a fire hazard.
- Fill hand-cut glass bowls and serving pieces with potpourri, flowers, fruit, candy etc. as a nice complement to china and silver. When using crystal, it is very important not to change the temperature quickly with cold or hot foods and water when cleaning as it will crack.
- An acid etched crystal compote is an elegant antique dish that would look lovely in nearly every room of the house.
- Bronze sconces with cut glass prisms combine the formal with the informal and could be hung about 54 inches high in a powder room (figure B).
- Functional crystal lamps come in a variety of styles and are visually interesting .
- A crystal cornucopia supported with a bronze ram's head is a beautiful antique accessory that can be used as a bud vase.
- The weight of wrought iron candlesticks paired with crystal prisms make them suitable for the family room or a sophisticated living or dining room (figure C).
