The parade outfits were usually made for masked balls, parades and children's costumes for pageants.
Step into the red, white and blue guest room in Joan Lucas' restored 1840s log home and you're transported to small-town America--old-fashioned parades, flag-waving crowds, whistle-stop campaign tours. You can almost hear the cheers and marching bands!
  • Because there are so many items in the room that are equally visually strong, the challenge was to create a display that showcased each item individually while blending them together as a whole. She used flags as a background and grouped many of the similar items together. Next, she filled in with smaller objects, like drums and children's toys, then larger ones, like parade parasols.
  • Many of the items are made of cloth and paper and need special care. Lucas does not launder these items and simply takes them outside and shakes off the dust.
