Guest Monica Heeren of Two Crafty Ladies demonstrates how to make a leaf-design luminaria using synthetic product called MICA and copper.
Materials:
ArtEmboss medium-weight copper
MICA amber colored shellac bond
7/32-inch and six-inch MasterFoil copper foil tape
ruler
utility knife
craft knife
cutting mat
embossing stylus
straight-sided water glass or soup can
heat tool
potholder
leaf pattern
three gold seed beads
three inches of 28-gauge brass wire
clear glass votive holder
votive candle
Steps:
1. Using a utility knife, cut a 4" x 9" piece of mica.
2. Emboss a leaf pattern onto two pieces of copper foil tape by tracing the pattern with a stylus (figure A). Peel the backing off the tape and lightly position it to the left and right edges of the MICA, leaving the center blank (figure B ). Do not burnish.
3. Use a craft knife to cut out the leaves (figure C). Remove the excess foil and burnish each leaf with the side of the stylus.
4. Wrap the edges of the MICA with the narrow copper foil tape and burnish with the side of the stylus (figure D).
5. Pierce a hole in the upper center of the MICA, using the tip of a craft knife, a heavy-duty needle or awl.
6. Mold the MICA around the water glass or soup can. Heat small sections at a time with a heat gun and ease the MICA into shape with a potholder (figure E). The MICA will bend easily when heated, but go slowly so the flakes don't start to separate from the panel (figure F).
7. Create a leaf 'charm' by tracing the leaf pattern onto a piece of copper foil sheet using the embossing stylus (figure G).
8. Turn the copper over and place it on a semi-flexible surface (vinyl, several scraps of felt, cardboard, etc.). Use the embossing stylus to repeatedly dent the leaf for a hammered metal look (figure H). Pierce a small hole in the top of the leaf stem and cut out the leaf with a craft knife or small scissors.
9. Center the leaf charm inside the MICA cylinder with the back of the charm against the MICA, aligning the pierced holes of the MICA and the charm (figure I).
10. Use the seed beads as 'buttons' to attach the two. Thread one bead to the center of a three-inch length of gold beading wire. Fold the wire in half and twist the bead once to secure. Starting from the outside of the cylinder, thread the wire through the MICA hole. Add a second bead to act as a spacer. Thread the wire through the copper image and add the last bead. Back-thread the wire around and through the last bead to secure (figure J).
11. Closely trim excess wire and tuck any visible ends under the bead.
12. Place the luminaria around the glass votive and light the candle.
