Our Place : Episode OPL-350 -- More Projects »
PHOTO
Host Renai Ellison shows how to create a standing family photo display frame, using an old window or door (see photo at right).

Materials:

salvaged window
paintbrushes
scraper
ruler or tape measure
matte board
soap and water
craft knife
brown paper
pictures
damp sponge
photo corners
putty knife
glacier points

Steps:

1.Clean both sides of the window with soap and water, then scrape off excess pieces of flaky, old paint.

2. Measure each windowpane, and draw the measurements onto a mat board. Use the ruler to make perfectly straight lines.

3. Use a craft knife to cut out the mat pieces. Be sure they will fit inside the panes.

4. Place brown paper on a flat surface to catch any residue.

5. Choose a photo and place it on the mat board.

6. Dampen a photo corner with a sponge. Lift one corner of the photo and place a photo corner on the picture (figure A) while firmly pressing down on the photo.

7. Continue this step for all four corners of the photo.

8. Place the mat board, with photo attached, face down into the windowpane so that picture is against the glass.

9. Use a glacier point (figure B) to press down the photo, press the sharp point of the glacier point into the pane and use a putty knife to push it into the pane.

10. Continue this on all four side of the photos.

Tips

  • Use a ruler with cork backing to avoid slippage when drawing on the mat board.

  • Make sure to put a new blade in the craft knife before beginning.

  • The photo can be placed anywhere on the mat board, and you can even place a caption underneath the photo.

  • Using photo corners allows you to change out photographs as often as you'd like.
