Janie Petkus helps narrow the focus on antique china by sharing three types that were very popular during the 19th century and still are today:
- Most people enjoy the freshness of Majolica and its botanical motifs (figure A). The crocodile humidor has a removable head to store tobacco inside. Even a few pieces grouped together on a unique display shelf help add character to a room .
- Lusterware has a clean and shiny finish, which added a nice glow to candlelit rooms (figure B). Use them to hold flowers or as a soap dish in a bathroom . Copper luster pieces have a warmer color palette and can be grouped together on a mantel.
- Transfer ware is named for the process by which these pieces were made. A copper engraving was inked, and then pressed onto the piece of china. This allowed the common person to have elegant china much like the rich (figure C).
- Petkus believes that collections and antiques should be used. Incorporate them into your decor as vases, fruit bowls or to hold potpourri.
- Make sure that a plate stand used for display is cushioned to hold the piece securely and allows for different tilt angles.
