Figure A
Tabletop Soccer Game

Materials:

1/4" thick and 1" x 6" poplar boards
3/4" birch plywood
3/4" wood dowels
jigsaw
drill and 7/8" spade bit
stain
nylon netting
screws
table tennis balls

Steps:

  1. Cut the poplar boards to measure 30" x 5-1/2" for the two sides and 18" x 5 -1/2" for the end pieces. Cut the goals out of the two end pieces with a jigsaw to measure 2" x 5" (figure A).
  2. Cut the plywood 30" x 17" for the playing field.
  3. Construct the player pieces. Create three 1-1/2-inch wide slots in six 36-inch long dowels with a router using a jig that holds the dowel in place. Insert 1-1/2-inch pieces of 1/4-inch poplar for players. The two 36-inch long goalie dowels only need one two-inch-wide slot for a two-inch paddle.
  4. For the side pieces of the playing field, drill eight holes into each side using a spade bit. Cut a slot wide enough for the paddle to slide through at the top of every other hole. This will allow the player dowels to slide through and give enough freedom to be pulled back and forth and spin while playing.
  5. Assemble the sides and attach the bottom. Stain the pieces as desired (stain the teams in different colors to make it easier to distinguish between them) and let dry.
  6. Attach netting to the two goals and slide the player sticks through the slots.
