Cover a boring hatbox with paint and a glitter design for a whimsical Halloween touch.
Materials:

hatboxes
latex paint (orange and black)
paintbrushes
white craft glue
glitter (orange and black)
pencil
black marker
black heavy wire
awl
needle-nose pliers
wire cutter
cookie sheet or baking pan
craft paper

Steps:

  1. Paint entire box and lid (except the outside edge) orange and let dry. Paint the outside lid edge black and let dry.
  2. Draw a simple jack-o'-lantern face on craft paper and cut out the design. Place the box lid on a cookie sheet or baking pan lined with paper. Put the template over the lid and brush glue over the openings. Remove the template.
  3. While glue is wet, sprinkle a thick coat of black glitter over it. Shake off excess onto paper for reuse. Allow glue to dry completely and use a brush to wipe off stray glitter.
  4. Carefully brush glue over the rest of the lid. Sprinkle orange glitter on (avoiding the facial features) and let dry completely.
  5. Apply black glitter around the rim as above.
  6. Place lid on box. Use awl to make a hole on opposite sides of the hatbox bottom just below the lid. Cut an 18-inch piece of wire for a handle and thread it through the holes. Twist the ends with pliers so they're secure.
