Figure D
Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates how to create decorative stained-glass votives (see photo at right).

Materials:

five stained-glass pieces (that have been cut to the size that the votives will be)
scissors
1/4-inch copper tape
masking tape
1/2-inch copper tape

Steps:

  1. You will need five cut pieces of glass--four for the sides and one the for bottom.

  2. Using 1/4-inch copper tape, wrap all the edges of each sheet of glass with tape (figure A).

  3. Center on the edge and press down on both sides until flattened (figure B). Take care to keep the tape centered on the edge.

  4. Press down firmly with your finger or the back of a spoon to get really flat along the edge and sides.

  5. Use masking tape to secure all four sides together, temporarily creating an open-ended box. Line up the edges.

  6. Apply 1/2-inch copper tape up and down along each corner where the edges meet from the inside to out to secure the corners together (figure C).

  7. Tape a piece of glass onto the bottom of the votive, securing with masking tape in a few places.

  8. Attach the bottom permanently with 1/2-inch tape, in the same manner as the sides (figure D).
