Pair a contemporary poster with a modern painting over a piece of traditional furniture.
Designer Cathy Whitlock gives a lesson in choosing art for a room:
  • Art doesn't have to match the furniture. Buy what you love, not necessarily items with similar colors. Don't be afraid to make a statement by putting a funky painting with a drab sofa.
  • Put simple ethnic-looking artwork in a space with little clutter or in a contemporary room.
  • Black and white photography can simplify an ornate chair.
  • Framing several styles of art on one wall in a similar way ties them together .
  • Hang art at the eye level of a person of average height.
  • For a sleek look, mix in Oriental or art deco pieces.
