Materials:
photocopies of images to print (black and white/color)
acetone
dust mask
masking tape
glass jar or cup
scissors
burnishing tool or spoon
stiff paintbrush
watercolor paper
Note: Be sure to do this process in a well-ventilated room while wearing a dust mask.
Steps:
- Cut out image to be transferred and center it on watercolor paper. Remember that the image will appear reversed if there is text in it. Secure copy with masking tape.
- Pour a small amount of acetone into a glass jar or cup (plastic will melt).
- Lift the photocopy and brush a generous but not runny amount of acetone back and forth onto the watercolor paper in small sections at a time.
- Place the photocopy down and quickly rub the image onto the watercolor paper using gentle pressure and a burnishing tool or spoon. Take care not to rip or damage the paper.
- Repeat process until the image is completely transferred. Periodically lift it to make sure it's working. When finished, peel off paper and tape to reveal the softened image.
Tips:
- This project must be done using photocopies, not originals. Most office printers use ink, which will run and bleed when wet with acetone. Instant camera pictures can be used as they are for this process.
- Use your own original artwork or copyright-free imagery.
- Create a collage from magazine images, and then photocopy that to use.
