Decorative painter Donna Dewberry demonstrates how to paint beautiful designs onto candles without using a candle-painting medium
(see photo at right).
Materials:
variety of artists' brushes, including a round, stiff "scruffy" brush (Plaid One-Stroke brand was used on the show.)
acrylic paints (Plaid FolkArt brand was used on the show.)
bowl to make candle a stand (optional)
candles
Steps:
- Double-load a scruffy brush by dipping it in two colors of paint, one on one side and one on the other (figure A).
* Note: Do not use water on the brush because it beads up when it touches candle wax. Use paint only and you won't need a candle-painting medium.
- Paint a background on the bowl (figure B) (if you choose to do this extra step) and on the candle (figure C) by pouncing with a brush. Repeatedly press it down onto the surface and pull it back up quickly. Let dry.
- Paint vines with a long, thin brush, using wispy strokes.
- Double-load a large (3/4-inch) flat brush with green and white paint. Paint leaves (figure D).
- Double-load a scruffy brush with purple, lavender and a bit of white.
- Pounce over various areas of the vines to make wisteria (figure E).
Tip
Don't use heavily scented candles because they have more oils, which won't allow the paint to stick.
