Craft expert Katheryn Bieber demonstrates painting techniques for creating dramatic animal-print candles.
Materials:
cotton ball dipped in alcohol
sponge brushes
candle-painting medium or primer
candle paints
makeup sponges
artists brushes
cotton swabs
clothespins
Steps:
- Wipe candle with a cotton ball that has been dipped in alcohol to clean.
- Use a sponge brush to apply a coat of candle-painting medium (figure A). It is very important to use the medium, because paint will not stick to candles without it. Let dry at least 15 minutes.
- Look at animal-print fabrics to get ideas for designs. Paint the candle with a base coat that will serve as a good background for the chosen animal print.
- For leopard spots, make a stamp out of a makeup sponge by cutting away part of the sponge so that an irregular oval remains raised in the center of the sponge. Dab an oval into the paint and scatter dots all over candle (figure B).
- Using an artists brush, make an irregular outline around dots with black paint. For zebra stripes, start with "V" shapes of black paint and extend in irregular lines around candle (figure C).
- On striped candles, use a cotton swab or the end of a clothespin (figure D) to dip in paint and make irregular dots all along the stripes.
