Materials:
1/2" plywood for back and base (back is 18" x 24", base is 6" x 18")
two 4" L-brackets and screws
plastic foam piece for base
off-white satin latex
stucco
construction glue
1/4" craft foam for printing stones
acrylic paints: gray, off-whites, brown , black
glazes for aging stones and stucco: moss, raw sienna, dark brown
pan for grass
potting soil
grass seed
Steps:
- Cut plywood to shape for back and base.
- Cut stone shapes from craft foam for background.
- Randomly apply acrylic stone colors to shapes and print background (figure A). Let dry.
- Add detail to stones with glazes.
- Apply stucco to remaining area of backboard (figure B). It doesn't need to be very thick. Add texture by pouncing trowel or spatula to create small peaks, and then knock them down carefully by wiping across the top again lightly.
- Add detail to stucco with glazes.
- Cut plastic foam piece with knife to create a stone pattern to fit over grass pan (figure C).
- Cover the foam with stucco and allow to dry. Apply color as desired to resemble stone.
- Secure candle or plate holder to the back. To grow grass, place potting soil in pan and plant grass seeds. Keep watered and place on base when grown. Put plant in place and cover front with the plastic foam block secured with construction glue (figure D).
