Create a checkerboard pattern out of paper or fabric to avoid struggling with individual squares.

Steps:

  1. Lay out a sheet of paper or cloth in the desired finished checkerboard size and in the first color (i.e. white).
  2. Cut equal strips out of the second color (i.e. red). Make the strips the width of a ruler or other template. Glue the red strips to the white sheet at the same intervals as the strip width. Use the ruler or template to space them evenly. If this is a sewing project, cut out the strips and sew them together.
  3. There should now be a sheet of strips - be sure to end with a different color than you started with (i.e. red, white, red, white, red, white).
  4. Use the ruler or template to cut strips to go across the striped sheet. When done placing them loosely, flip every other strip over, being sure to end with the opposite color than you began with.
  5. Glue or sew in place (accounting for seam allowance) for a perfect checkerboard.
