Materials:
Interior designer Cathy Whitlock shows a variety of candlesticks and how they can be used to decorate a home.
Tips:
- Crystal candlesticks are good to use in groupings of three or more. Try several different styles--since they are all crystal, they will blend nicely.
- Remove candle wax from crystal candlesticks by putting them in the freezer. Once hard, chip the wax away with a butter knife.
- Turn a saki cup upside down for a unique candleholder.
- Find whimsical candles that make a statement, such as regional art pieces.
- Group silver together for a dramatic look. Mix antique candlesticks with brand new ones.
- Buy unique candle collars and embellishments like water cups that slide around tapers. Fill with ivy to add greenery to the look.
- Top unusual candlesticks made of wire or wooden corkscrews with candle shades.
- Be sure not to let wooden candlesticks burn down too far to avoid damaging them.
- Use items found at flea markets to make candlesticks such as old industrial wooden spools for a rustic look.
- Large iron candleholders look nice in an entryway or in front of a fireplace.
