Creative expert Roxanne Givens Copeland shows how to create a multicultural holiday display to decorate a dining room. The centerpiece is made up of three small trees decorated with Scandinavian, Asian and Afro-Caribbean motifs. She also uses diverse cultural influences to decorate the chandelier, dining-room chairs and china cabinet.

Figures A and B--Copeland's Scandinavian tree is decorated with traditional elements, such as sheaves of wheat, hearts and candlelights. All are items symbolizing peace, love and happiness.

Figure C--A julbock is a straw goat, and in Swedish culture, it carries the gift giver to Christmas celebrations.

Figure D--In Caribbean culture, Christmas is kicked off with a carnival. The tree is decorated with items associated with Caribbean festivities such as lots of bright red feathers, parrots, fruits and ornaments in the shape of musicians.

Figure I--Copeland uses a variety of small wreaths to decorate the dining-room chairs and other areas of the house. Though each wreath features a different theme, the end result is a feeling of welcoming and warmth.

Figure J--The chandelier is resplendent with fire-retardant artificial pine, pepper berries and stretch velvet cords. When decorating a light fixture, be sure to keep decorations away from the light bulbs.
