Glue Types

Room by Room : Episode RXR-809 -- More Projects »
Hide Glue: This comes in liquid form and is very strong. It can be softened under warm water or steam so the project can be disassembled and reattached. It's for indoor work only.

Yellow Glue: It's strong and has a fast grab (it starts to stick as soon as two pieces of material are joined together). This product is water resistant and is easy to sand when dry. Type II is available for exterior use. A caution... once used, it's stuck!

White Glue: This is strong, dries clear and can be used for wood or paper projects. It doesn't hold up under water or high humidity.

Tips:

  • Never sand a surface before joining. Sanding flattens wood fibers and doesn't allow the glue to penetrate.
  • Tighten clamps just enough to make the joints come together or the glue will squeeze out. Be patient and keep clamps on long enough (at least an hour with yellow glue).
  • Wipe off excess glue with a damp sponge so it doesn't hold back paint or stain .
  • Buy only what you need--the stuff does get old.
