Fabric Trees

Room by Room : Episode RXR-513 -- More Projects »
Materials:

plastic foam cones, any size
glue (either white glue or hot glue )
fabric
pins
scissors

Steps:

  1. Begin by cutting from the length of your fabric a 2-1/2 inch wide strip. Use your judgment as to how many strips you will need, depending on the size and number of cones to be covered. Using your scissors, go down the length of your fabric strip cutting a 1-1/2 inch slit approximately every 1/2 inch. If you want a non-frayed tree, go to step 2 now. If you wish your fabric to look a little worn and the edges frayed, put your strips into the washing machine and the dryer. Be aware that you will end up with a big tangled ball when this is done, so put aside some time when you're watching TV to untangle this before going to step 2.
  2. Begin putting the fabric on the cone starting at the bottom, or widest, part of the cone. Use white glue or a hot glue gun. Put a line of glue horizontally along the base of the cone, and start applying your first fabric strip. You are glueing the non-slit side of the fabric to the cone, which will allow the slit ends to face down and form the branches. If you are having trouble keeping the beginning of the fabric in place, tack it in with a straight pin. Gradually work your way around the cone back to the beginning. When you get back to the beginning of the fabric, slightly incline your fabric strip so that you are glueing just above the slits in the bottom row. You can place your rows as closely to each other as you like--it just depends on how many "branches" you would like on your trees. When your fabric strip runs out, simply start a new piece right where the last one left off. Work your way up the cone to the very top - there you can fold the fabric strip right over the top and glue it in place.
  3. If desired, dress up the top with wooden stars or other ornaments.
