Host Renai Ellison creates a wonderful table fountain using a collection of large seashells, decorative stones and simple installation techniques
(see photo at right).
Materials:
various sizes of seashells (including one large conch shell)
starfish, sea stones, rocks
large pot
waterproof caulk
small 63 gallons-per-hour pump
plastic tubing
plate
smaller, terra-cotta pot with a broken top (see figure A)
drill
drill bits
adhesive putty
felt pads
Steps:
- Be sure to thoroughly wash seashells or starfish that you have collected from the beach to remove any debris and odor.
- Plug any holes that may be in the bottom of the large pot with waterproof caulk.
- Attach the pump to the piece of plastic tubing (figure A). Thread the tubing through the hole in the bottom of a terra-cotta pot (figure B). The side of the pot should be broken so that the pump and tubing can be reached when the pot is resting bottom-side up in the bowl. Set aside.
- Using a drill, bore a hole in the backside of the large conch shell that will be the same size as the plastic tubing (figure C).
- Thread the plastic tubing through the hole. The large shell, plastic tubing, pump and terra-cotta pot should all be connected together now.
- Using adhesive putty, level the large conch shell onto the terra-cotta pot.
- Place stones, other shells and starfish around the terra-cotta pot and inner workings of the fountain.
- Place the felt pads on the plate, then place the fountain on the plate.
