Project designed by Kari Lee.
Materials:
poster board
parchment kidskin or rawhide double bend
Latigo leather lace
rawhide lace
mini punch set
poly mallet
poly cutting board
two prong lacing needle
jumbo Perma-lok needle
leather craft shears
horse hair tassels
new or recycled wire lampshade frame with narrow-set spokes
decorative stamp
acrylic paint
sponge applicators
craft knife with extra #11 blades
straight edge / ruler
clothespins
pencil
Steps:
1. Make a template, or pattern, from newspaper or any other type of paper. Tape it on the frame then mark the position of the top and bottom, as well as the spokes (figure A). Paste the pattern onto poster board.
2. Soak the rawhide in a clean bathtub.
3. Cut out the rawhide trim piece with a craft knife. You can secure the rawhide with a weight or clothespins while you cut. Punch holes as needed. Keep the rawhide wet during this process.
4. Position the rawhide trim piece on the wire lampshade frame, and secure with clothespins.
5. Cut one Latigo lace length two to three times the diameter for the top and bottom lip of the shade of the frame.
6. Attach the Perma-lok needle onto the lace length for the top lip of shade. Attach the top lip of rawhide trim piece onto the wire frame with a whipstitch.
7. Repeat step #6 to secure bottom edge of trim piece onto the bottom lip of the wire shade.
8. Cut a length of rawhide lace two times the length of the side seam. Soak the rawhide lace until pliable and attach two-prong needle. Thread the rawhide lace along the side seam to secure (figure B).
9. Allow the rawhide lampshade to dry completely.
10. Stamp the design onto the lampshade.
11. Add the desired embellishments such as beads, tassels or ribbon.
Tips:
- Pull the lace snug, but not too tight. As the rawhide dries, it will shrink around the wire frame becoming stiff and taut. If you have pulled the stitches too tight , the wire frame will bow.
- Refrain from using a bulb with a wattage higher than 60.
