Use throw pillows to add color and texture to room decor.

Interior designer Shirley Horowitz gives designer tricks of the trade for using home accessories.

Tips:

• Try to give end or side tables a full look without being cluttered. For instance, display a tall piece with a shorter item, such as a lamp with a plate on a stand. Even display out with a third accessory such as a decorative box.
• Try using throw pillows with a geometric background (like animal prints), which look great paired with softer, more traditionally styled pillows. Pillows can also change the look of a piece of furniture (they can soften a boxy sofa, for instance).
• Add height to a cocktail table by placing tall candlesticks on it. Alter heights by placing one on some books or a box.
• Use books and boxes when displaying small items to make the item appear to be on a stand.
• Decorate a round table with a large lamp.
• Mix materials--place a bronze lamp on a wooden table.
• Use a Lucite box to display items. This makes a small figure appear larger and also protects it.
