Project demonstrated by Marie Clapper.

Materials:

120 wooden kitchen matches
thick cardboard or thin plywood
thick craft glue
decoupage medium
paper
pencil
ruler
scissors
tissue

Steps:

  1. Cut a cross shape out of cardboard or plywood (figure 1). Draw a centered horizontal line on the cross. Draw a centered, intersecting vertical line across the horizontal one.
  2. Cut the tips off of four matches, leaving four 3/4" sticks. Glue these four sticks onto the cardboard cross where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect.
  3. Light the remaining 116 matches one at a time, blowing each one out immediately. Carefully wipe off burnt match ends with a tissue.
  4. Glue matches onto the cardboard cross (figure 2), beginning with the nine-match sections and finishing with the 16-match sections.
  5. Decoupage or varnish finished project.
  6. Glue a picture hanger on the back of the cross for displaying.
Tip: Adapt the size of the pattern to make a smaller cross with smaller matches.
