A shoji window screen adds an Oriental influence.
Materials:

large piece of brown craft paper, pencil and measuring tape (for pattern)
rice paper or other sturdy decorative paper
double-stick transfer tape or adhesive transfer gum (ATG) tape (available at art supply and framing supply stores)
six 1-5/8" zinc-plated drywall screws or deck screws
wood filler
wood glue
sandpaper
paint or stain and clear acrylic finish
1/8" thick self-adhesive bumper pads (for mounting the screen inside the window frame)
mat knife
spring clamps
1/8" combination drill and countersink bit
small miter box and backsaw
parting stop (wood for screen frame)

Steps:

Designing a pattern:

  1. Measure the inside of the window frame and determine outer measurements of screen. Draw outline of screen on large sheet of paper. (Use accurate measurements and square corners and allow for frame to fit within window)
  2. Draw inner lattice of screen as desired (draw all sections 1/2 inch wide to allow for frame). Sections should abut each other at right angles. (It is helpful to plan the design of the lattice on another piece of paper first before actually drawing it on the pattern).
  3. Tape the finished pattern to the window frame to ensure it is accurate.
Making the framework:
  1. Measure the pattern for the length of each wood section, including the stiles, rails, lattice and outer frame sections. Leave the sections slightly longer than the desired finished length.
  2. Check the lengths of outer frame sections by placing sections of parting stop over pattern.
  3. Sand the ends of sections until they fit the pattern exactly. Reposition on the pattern.
  4. Repeat this with all the pieces for the stiles, rails and lattice sections until the entire framework is laid out on pattern.
  5. Once the frame is in place, glue and clamp all the sections.
  6. After glue has set up, add screws to secure frame (pre-drill holes for these).
  7. Cover exposed screw heads in lattice with wood filler if desired. Allow to dry . Sand filled areas until flush with wood surface.
  8. Sand any rough areas of the screen lightly. If desired, paint or stain the framework and apply clear acrylic finish. Let dry.

Attaching the paper:

  1. Cut rice paper 1 inch longer and wider than outer frame.
  2. Place screen framework face down on flat surface and apply double-stick transfer tape to all styles, rails and lattices.
  3. Center piece of paper (right side down) and affix to each side to frame.
  4. Pull paper taut and affix sides of paper to stiles and rails.
  5. Affix paper to all the lattice sections following the same procedure.
  6. Fold back the excess paper at the edges of inner frame, crease and trim using mat knife.

To mount screen:

  1. Mark placement for screw eyes on top of the outer frame. Pre-drill holes using a drill bit slightly smaller than the diameter of threaded portion of screw eye. Insert screw eyes.
  2. Hold screen in place at window, overlapping window frame 1/2 inch. Mark placement for shoulder hooks.
  3. Pre-drill the holes for shoulder hooks using a drill bit slightly smaller than diameter of threaded portion of hook. Insert hooks.
  4. Hang the screen by placing the screw eyes over the shoulder hooks.
