Materials:

natural laundry basket in desired shape
fabric (about 30" wide)
sewing thread to match fabric and needle
drawstring
iron-on seam tape or fabric glue

Steps:

  1. Measure circumference of laundry basket and add 1-1/2" (for seam allowance) for fabric length.
  2. The width will depend of the height of the basket, but allow lots of extra room for laundry to pile on top and still allow drawstring to be pulled over the top.
  3. Fold fabric in half (right sides facing) and pin along seam line.
  4. Hem edge with iron-on tape, fabric glue or hand stitching or a sewing machine.
  5. Along bottom of edge of fabric (the one that will attach to basket) iron on seam tape to prevent fabric from stretching out of shape.
  6. To make drawstring casing press top raw edge under by 1/4" and iron flat.
  7. Turn edge under again by about 1-1/2" to 2" and press along top edge.
  8. Attach fabric to basket with hot glue then hand-stitch to secure.
  9. Insert drawstring by tying a knot in one end and attaching a safety pin to the other to feed it through. Tie a knot in the other end when completely through the casing.
