Hang your quilt collection with these tiles.
Materials:

42" square piece of 3/4" birch plywood (or size suited to your own project)
1" width painter's tape
latex satin paint
drill
sandpaper
polyurethane/stain in color of your choice
25 natural wooden knobs
25 wood screws
paint brush
stain brush
tack cloth

Steps:

  1. I aways visit my favorite lumber man and ask him if he'll cut out a piece of material to my dimensions. There's a slight upcharge, but it's worth it to me. If you've got the right tools and safety equipment at home, by all means, cut it yourself. Prep the front surface by lightly sanding with the grain using a 220 grade sandpaper. Tack off with a tack cloth.

  2. Measure out your design on the front of your board, and mask it off. Remember, you are covering up with the tape the areas that you want to see the birch wood grain through. We taped off an inner border about 4" from the edge, and then completely taped off the corners.

  3. Once the tape is on and secure, paint over it with the color of your choice making sure to use enough paint to cover the wood in one coat. Don't forget to paint the edges! Before the paint is dry, remove the tape so as not to tear the paint film.

  4. Once the paint has fully dried, usually about 24 hours, measure out and lightly mark where you want your wooden knobs to be placed. Drill a small pilot hole from the front to the back. Then, lightly sand if needed.

  5. Next, use your polyurethane/stain to cover over the entire front of the board, including the painted areas. While the stain is out, you might as well stain the wooden knobs. It's easier to do if you slightly screw in the wood screws and hold the knobs up by the screws!

  6. After everything is fully dried, simply attach the wood knobs with the wood screws, add two heavy duty hangers to the back, or screw eyes and heavy duty wire, then hang your hanger, and hang your quilts!

To make your tile hanger look more interesting, hang it on the wall as a diamond shape. If you decide to do this you'll have to mark your wooden knob holes accordingly.
