In this case the lampshade itself is already made. We cover it. Quickly. And attractively.
Materials:
ready made lampshade with adhesive coating
handmade paper
paintbrush
water
pencil
heavy or corrugated cardboard
Hand made paper is available in art supply stores and most craft stores. The paper that Carol selected for the shade that she covered today was imbedded with flowers. She mentioned, however, that it is frequently worth it to shop around. In different stores of the same chain she found the same paper at two different prices. In one store the price was $3.13. In another it was $1.34! At either price it was a good buy.
- Remove covering from lampshade. Put the shade aside and place the covering on the wrong side of the selected paper. Draw around. Add a 3/4" wide strip along one side edge. This is for overlap. You may prefer to cut it narrower later. Before tearing hold paper up to the light to be certain that you drew the pattern where you will get the greatest benefit from the paper.
- Place lampshade pattern on heavy cardboard and draw around the bottom of the shade for about 8". Draw around the top edge of the pattern for about six". Remove pattern. 2" inside the bottom line draw another curved line. Do the same with the line drawn around the top edge. Draw straight lines at the end of each piece and cut out. These are merely to have something to tear against when you tear out the handmade paper covering. If you would prefer the sharper edge obtained from using scissors then these cardboard pieces are not necessary.
- Place cardboard piece along the top edge of the outline drawn on the handmade paper, "paint" along the line with a brush dipped in water then tear the paper using the cardboard as a guide and an edge to tear against. Continue along the entire top edge and repeat along the bottom edge.
- Place torn out piece on the lampshade lining up one straight edge along the seam in the shade. Carefully press the handmade paper cover in position all the way around. Apply a thin layer of white glue along the overlap and press into position. Lampshade done!
Note: A row of fringe was added along the bottom edge of one of the larger shades.
