Want to add some animal magnetism to your next dinner party? Well, look no further than your favorite art or fabric store. There you'll find an array of zebra, cheetah, leopard and even jaguar prints. But beware--it's easy to get carried away with these animal images, so start small. We made a place mat and a decorative plate, but you could also use these techniques on lampshades, chair cushions, curtains and more.
Materials:
unfinished wood plates
Bunny Burner transfer tool
printed copies of animals*
clear spray shellac
metallic paints
LeafTek rub-on adhesive designs (discontinued)
LeafTek gold-leaf sheets (discontinued)
cotton cloth
wood stain - optional
*The featured project used black and white copies, but color can also be used.
Steps:
- On a photocopier, enlarge or reduce printed copies of animals to fit on wood plates (figure A).
- Place the printed animal copy facedown on the plate. Rub the back of the design with the transfer tool to transfer the image to the plate (figure B).
- Spray the front and back of the plates with a light coat of shellac. Allow to dry.
- Rub adhesive designs around rim of plates according to the manufacturer's instructions (figure C).
- Place a leafing sheet on top of the adhesive designs and rub lightly with a soft cloth until the gold adheres to the design. Brush away any flakes with the cloth (figure D).
- Thin metallic paints with a small amount of water and use the thinned paint to add color to the transferred animal design if desired. The paint will lightly tint the design, allowing the transferred design to show through (figure E).
- Optional: Use a soft cloth to rub wood stain over entire plate using soft cloth. Remove excess stain and allow to dry.
