Mimic marquetry with wood stain.
Materials:

Walnut Hollow serving tray #3580
220-grit sandpaper
tack cloth
craft knife
blue painters tape
plastic plate
bristle brush
sea sponge cut into small pieces
rubber gloves
clear acrylic spray sealer
1/2" thick glass cut to fit the inside of the tray
MinWax Wood Finish Stains: Golden Oak and Dark Walnut
MinWax Wood Finish Stain Markers: Golden Oak, Provincial, Red Mahogany, Early American, Cherry, Dark Walnut

Steps:

  1. Sand the wood to make it smooth and clean. Use a tack cloth to remove any dust.
  2. Use painter's tape to cover areas to be treated with faux marquetry.
  3. Using a bristle brush, coat the remaining surface with Golden Oak stain, and let it dry.
  4. Pour a small amount of Dark Walnut stain into a plastic plate. Wearing gloves, dampen the sea sponge and dip it into the stain. Dab off any excess onto scrap paper. To ensure a good pattern, the sea sponge must be nearly dry.
  5. Start sponging the surface in such hard-to-reach areas as corners, and work toward the center of the piece. Try to get an even pattern of sponging, and in tight corners, use a small bristle brush.
  6. After the piece dries completely, remove the tape.
  7. Mark off the marquetry segments on the project. (Try 1" intervals.) Score each segment with a knife.
  8. Use the stain markers to apply one stain color at a time, allowing each color to dry before starting another. To prevent the stain from bleeding into next segment, don't apply the stain all the way to the scored edge.
  9. When all the stain is dry, apply two coats of acrylic sealer spray. When that has dried, place the piece of glass inside the tray.
