Poster Framing
Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-318 -- More Projects »
Artwork doesn't need to be expensive. Kaye Evans shows how posters can look just as attractive as high-end wall art when properly mounted and framed.
Materials:
Nielsen Metal Frame
Nielsen Omni Hanger
Nielsen Metal Frame Hardware
Artcare Archival Foamboard
Sandel Satinview Glass
StudioTac Dry Adhesive
bumpons
hand-held glass cutter
poster (of choice)
screwdriver
wire to hang picture
sandpaper
utility knife
glass cleaner
coffee filters
craft stick
Steps:
- Locate the desired poster and measure to determine the correct size for the mounting board and frame.
- At a local frame shop, order a Nielsen Metal frame of choice from the custom area or pick up a Nielsen Readymade frame. Make sure the size is the same as the poster measurement.
- Cut the Artcare Archival Foamboard to be 2" larger than the finished frame. Make sure to mark the measurement in two spots to ensure accuracy. Protect the work surface from cuts. Hold a metal ruler against the marks, and using a utility knife, score into the foamboard. Do not try to cut the full depth on the first cut. This cut will provide a channel for the utility knife to travel. Hold the ruler steady and repeat the cut. This time cut the depth of the foamboard. Use the excess foamboard to lightly sand the edges of the finished cut. Repeat for the other measurement. This is the size of the mounting board and final trimming will be later.
- Remove the release paper from the StudioTac Dry Adhesive and apply it to the poster by simply laying the poster's reverse (backside) onto a page of the StudioTac. Check the work surface to ensure nothing will harm the poster. Turn the poster to the reverse (backside) and place face side down onto the work surface. Burnish (rub) with a craft stick and the StudioTac will adhere to the back of the poster. If the poster is larger than the page of the StudioTac, simply repeat the process until all of the back of the poster is covered with dry adhesive.
- Turn the poster to the reverse (backside) and carefully peel back from one end of the poster 1" of the release paper. This will expose the StudioTac Dry Adhesive. Position the poster's exposed adhesive onto the Artcare Archival Foamboard. Lightly smooth the print down. Pull the release paper and continue to walk the poster onto the foamboard. Note: Be careful not to turn the poster back or it may be creased.
- Burnish the mounted poster to insure the StudioTac is secured to the Artcare Archival Foamboard.
- Place the metal ruler against the side of the poster and trim to the exact edge in the same manner as the foamboard was cut in step #3.
- Cut the Sandel Satinview non-glare glass to the size of the poster. Carefully seam the edges of the glass so they will not scratch the poster. Seaming the glass is as easy as placing the piece of sandpaper over a block of wood, position at a 45-degree angle to the glass and make one sanding pass on each of the edges. Repeat until all edges are sanded. Clean the Satinview non-glaze glass using the coffee filters, and position carefully on the mounted poster. Turn the entire package to the reverse side.
- Assemble a short rail and a long rail of the Nielsen Metal Frame. Repeat with the other short and long rail. Work with the corners and make sure they fit together tightly. Insert the hardware for the other two corners into the long rails. Tighten the screw to secure.
- Place each of the assembled corners over the poster "sandwich" and make sure it fits into the channel of the Nielsen Metal Frame. Work the metal hardware into the short rail. This should be easy, as the hardware will slip into the short rail. Work each corner and tighten until the corner is tight. Position the Nielsen Omni Hanger one-fourth of the distance from the top of the frame and tighten into place. Place wire through the hole and wrap to secure. Place the wire into the Omni Hanger on the opposite side and secure. Make sure to leave the wire at a 19-degree angle. Attach the bumpons to the bottom of the frame so it will not scratch the wall and will allow an air space for the Nielsen Metal Frame. Hang on wall of choice!
