Meri Stevens, designer and former president of Waverly Fabrics, creates a quick and attractive wall display for cards, photos and other personal mementos.

Materials:

scissors
two coordinating colors or prints of two-inch wide grosgrain or satin ribbon
rubber bands
safety pins
greeting cards, photos and other personal mementos
stapler

Steps:

  1. Cut two 20-inch lengths of the main ribbon.
  2. Cut the secondary ribbon into several lengths: one 20-inch length, one 36-inch length and one 70-inch length. Measurements don't have to be exact for steps 1 and 2.
  3. Fold the two pieces of the main ribbon and the 20-inch length of the secondary ribbon back over themselves so that each forms a loop. Use the 36-inch piece of the secondary ribbon to form a loop of the same size, leaving two streamers.
  4. Stack the four loops with the long one on the top and the others alternating "main-secondary-main" below it. Scrunch them in the middle and fasten them together with a rubber band, a twist-tie, or a piece of wire. Notch the ends of the streamers. Tip: To make notches, fold each end in half vertically and make one diagonal cut from the edge to the center of the ribbon.
  5. Tie a knot in one end of the 70-inch piece of the secondary ribbon, leaving about an inch at the end. Hold the loops from step 3 so that their tails are on top. Center the knot over the rubber band, and tuck the short end under the loops to hide the band. Fasten the knot to the rubber band with a safety pin. The safety pin will double as a hanger. Fluff the bow.
  6. Staple cards, photos and other personal mementos onto the long ribbon, turning them at an angle and overlapping them slightly.
