Materials:
wall sconce (available at thrift stores for around $5, or brand new in discount stores starting at $15)
grease pencil
enamel paints in desired colors
brush (one for each color)
hammer and small awl or drill with 1/16" bit
sandpaper (fine grit)
small gauge wire strung with decorative glass beads
wire cutters (needle nose)
Steps:
- Use fine grit sandpaper to scuff any shiny or glossy areas of the sconce. This will help the paint adhere.
- Draw design onto the sconce using grease pencil. Ideas include stars, flowers, simple shapes, a detail pulled from a piece of fabric, etc.
- Punch evenly spaced holes along bottom edge of sconce using awl and hammer, or drill and bit.
- Paint designs with enamel paint, using a clean brush for each different color. Allow to dry.
- Decorate top edges of sconce with wire stands of glass beads. Thread beads onto wire and slide strands through punched holes in the sconce.
- Attach sconce to wall according to manufacturer's directions or have a licensed electrician attach sconce to wall.
Tips:
- Make two matching sconces and place over mantel or dining room sideboard.
- Hang them in a hallway for fabulously soft evening light.
- Two on either side of entry door make a great decorating statement.
