Carol and her guest Emma Samms converse and put their words into action as they enhance the appearance of some rather dull frames. They stress how easy it is and how much money can be saved with a few DIY tricks, not just for frames, but for any item that requires a bit of sprucing up.
Materials:
frame or other surface to decorate
base coat acrylic paint
second color acrylic paint for highlights
paint pens or felt-tip markers
adhesive-backed paper or fabric
acrylic glaze
scissors
Steps:
- After selecting your colors, paint frame with a base coat and allow it to dry. Lightly sponge-on a second color of paint to create highlights and to give the piece an "antiqued" look.
- When dry, use paint pens or felt-tip markers to add designs. Finish off with a glaze to produce a professional look.
- You can also use these techniques to decorate other surfaces, such as flower pots, tea pots, trays, etc. As an example, Emma showed a tray covered with fabric and decorated around the edges with a gold felt-tip pen.
- Similarly, Carol showed how to cover the frame with paper or fabric. First, she laid the frame on the back of the paper and drew a diagonal line out from the corners. She then cut along the line to make the corners. Her best tip for this project? Start with a print to make the pieces easier to align.
