Figure A
Materials:

1"x 10" poplar for base
finger-jointed casing
1/8"-thick piece of luan

Steps:

  1. Cut the 1"x 10" to the appropriate length using a circular saw and a speed square to guide the cut. Cut two casing pieces to the same length with a backsaw and miter box. Mount it flush with the edge of the 1"x 10". To do this, hold the casing in place and drill pilot holes (figure A). Set casing aside and put down a bead of wood glue. Attach it with finish nails, countersink them and fill holes flush with spackle. Once spackle is dry, sand smooth and prime piece.

Figure C
  • Create a ledge to support a false bottom (figure B). Attach leftover pieces of 1" x 3" pine along the inside edge of the casing (low enough for the luan to be inset). Once in place, the luan will rest on top of these (figure C ).

    Figure D
  • Pre-attach heavy-duty hinges to the inside of the bottom board (figure D). Determine hinge placement on the wall by putting the bridge in place and mark where the screws will go. Put the bridge down; make pilot holes and screw in plastic wall anchors. Return bridge to position and screw in place through hinges. Repeat procedure for the other side, working around the already-mounted bridge.
