Antique pewter prices can range from $100 to $1,000.
It was once called "poor man's silver" and was first used in the Roman times 3,000 years ago. In the 1700s, pewter was an important export from England to America . Melvyn Wolf, a pewter collector and expert, discusses some other interesting facts about pewter and how to care for the highly sought-after country collectible.
  • Antique pewter pieces include mugs, tankers (mugs with lids), bowls, dishes, plates and porengers (bowls with handles).
  • The popularity of pewter began to wane in the 1800s when porcelain came into style.
  • Wolf says when starting a pewter collection to buy clean-looking, quality pieces in good condition. Also, he says pieces from England, Ireland, Scotland or America are the most sought after because of their simple design.
  • Unlike silver or brass, pewter can be cleaned with soap and water.
