Figure D
Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates how to sew a round tree skirt with plush velvet fabric and a silk dupioni lining for a simple and elegant look.

Materials:

silk velvet
temporary spray adhesive for fabric
silk fabric lining
ruler
stick pin
scissors
bias tape or fabric trim

Steps:

  1. Think of the tree skirt as a large fabric doughnut that fits around the tree. This cut is easily achieved by first adhering the layers of velvet together, then adhering them to the lining with spray adhesive.

  2. Fold the fabric in half, then again to quarter it (figure A). Find the corner that is the center of the fabric. Measure the length of one of the sides, then mark that measurement at a 45-degree angle directly in the center and mark it with a stick pin (figure B).

  3. Cut a curve in the fabric aiming toward the pin. Once the arc is completely cut, snip off the base corner large enough to fit around the Christmas tree.

  4. Unfold the fabric, revealing the doughnut shape. Cut directly with the grain straight to the center hole (figure C).

  5. Add trim with bias tape to complete the look (figure D).
