A quote by Thomas Edison, "My mother was the making of me," looks beautiful when decoupaged on a plate.
Materials:

plates
white craft glue
quotations
scissors
gold marker pen
straight -edged razor
crackle medium
umber stain
paper towel
paper cup
paint
paintbrush
decorative papers
gold leaf spray paint

Steps:

  1. Wash plate with soap and water. Let dry thoroughly.
  2. Cut quotation to fit center area of plate and glue to underside. Place on paper cup and let dry completely.
  3. Use a gold marker pen to outline edges of quotation. If the marker slips, use a razor to scrape off the mistake.
  4. Apply first coat of crackle medium according to package directions. Place on cup and let dry 15 to 20 minutes, and then apply a second coat. Place on cup and let dry overnight.
  5. Brush stain on and wipe it off with a paper towel. Place on cup and let dry overnight.
  6. Paint or decoupage the background. For painting, apply it and place on cup to dry thoroughly.
  7. Use decorative paper for decoupaging. Cut it larger than the plate and cut seams along the plate bevels.
  8. Apply craft glue to entire back of plate with fingers. Lay paper over the glue . Use fingers to press it firmly to the plate and cut excess off. Continue pressing with fingers to remove excess glue and air bubbles. Take care not to remove too much glue (it will be cloudy but will dry clear).
  9. Clean up edges with the razor. Place on cup and let dry completely.
  10. Outline edges with gold marker and spray the back gold.
