Materials:
foil candy wrappers (enough to cover the surface of the chosen item)
wood home furnishing item (tray, plate, frame, box, etc.)
water-based base paint (red and white craft paint)
bookbinding, PVA (white glue) or decoupage glue
gold paint or any other highlighting color (optional)
stencil
wide-pattern cut ribbon
wire mesh, screen, lace or any other texture-producing sheet (optional)
EnviroTex Lite polymer coating
Steps:
- Base-coat the item. Let dry.
- Clean foil wrappers and let dry.
- Use glue to apply foil wrapper to item. Create interesting patterns using various colors and designs (figure A). Make sure all edges are glued down. Let dry completely.
- To create textured design, as done on the side of the featured tray and edges of the plate, hold a cut pattern over the area (try wide ribbon with cutout holes). Use a small foam rubber cosmetic sponge (or a stencil or foam brush) to apply the highlighting paint. A rough texture is desired, not a perfect design (figure B ). Let dry completely.
- Follow directions for using the polymer coating. This is a two-part process (like epoxy). Mix the two parts together and stir according to directions. Be sure to place the item in a liquid-tight box (a plastic storage box works well) as some of this polymer liquid will run off the item and drip through corner holes, etc. Make sure it's sitting on a flat and level surface.
- Pour or brush the polymer liquid over the item and be sure to cover all areas.
- Let dry according to directions. Apply a second coat if a thick coating is desired.
- When dry, cut, file or sand any hardened drips.
